Asbestos removal done, Casket Factory to come down
The old Casket Factory in Oneida, New York has been vacant since it was destroyed by arson in 2006. The city spent $49,000 from its capital projects fund for asbestos abatement. Fire can often break up and release fibers from asbestos-containing materials, increasing the dangers involved in cleanup. Another $50,000 was allocated for removal of the building. Someone obtained a demolition application but did not apply for the proper permit, so a resolution was passed to reallocate the money.
To complete the demolition process, the city will spend the money to take the building down, remove all of the debris, fill in the crawl space with clean fill and take down the decaying fence. After that, the lot will need to be graded and seeded. When the Council was asked whether the city would be reimbursed for the expenses involved, the mayor said that a lien may be placed on the property.
