Asbestos abatement begins in Rochester Midtown Tower project, redevelopment next

Three bids were submitted to complete the enormous redevelopment project of Midtown Tower in Rochester, New York. The city will be announcing the winning bidder within the next several weeks – either David Christa and Robert Morgan or Uri Kaufman of the Harmony Group.

The huge asbestos abatement project began on September 4 on the top three floors of Midtown Tower. Redevelopment cannot take place until the toxic substance is removed. Asbestos exposure can lead to a number of serious illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the lining of the chest or abdomen.

Christa and Morgan want to turn the tower into residential space for young professionals and empty nesters. Kaufman would like to use the space for primarily residential use, but with commercial and medical offices at street level.
