Wisconsin ore dock demolition postponed

The historic ore dock in Ashland, Wisconsin will live on for one more year. Demolition work will have to wait until next summer as contractors wait for one last permit between them, Canadian National Railway and the City of Ashland. Permits have already been obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The outstanding permit will cover responsibility for damages during the razing of the ore dock.

The mayor of Ashland is concerned about asbestos and lead paint falling off the dock that could get into the city’s water intake. If the toxins do show up in the water, he wants to know how it will be dealt with and who will be liable for the cleanup costs. A deal should be worked out within two weeks, but the demolition work itself cannot be completed until next summer, as the spray coating that will help keep asbestos and paint chips from blowing away must be applied during warm, dry weather.
