Asbestos debris found in dumpster behind shopping center

An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigation discovered asbestos debris in a dumpster behind the Cascade Heights Shopping Center in Atlanta, Georgia. When debris was being removed from a construction site at the shopping center, there was a concern that asbestos might be involved. Haz mat crews were called to the scene to carefully remove the contents of the dumpster, which was not configured to handle asbestos waste.

Floor tiles from the dumpster tested positive for asbestos. Employees from stores inside the shopping center were shocked to learn that there had been asbestos in the dumpster. The landlord was contacted by the EPA to inform them of the asbestos contamination. A company that specializes in hazardous waste was called in to properly remove the asbestos from the site. Although the landlord has cooperated with the investigation, there may still be fines issued for improper asbestos removal procedures.
