Pretrial hearing held for Massachusetts companies accused of illegal asbestos disposal

Mayo Group Development and Worcester Commons LLC have been accused of illegal disposal of asbestos at the Bancroft on the Common building in Worcester, Massachusetts during construction in 2006 and 2007. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office has claimed that the two companies knew that there was asbestos in the building, that they failed to get the proper permits and that they failed to protect both workers and building residents. A pretrial hearing was held on August 12.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection took samples from the construction site, and the samples tested positive for asbestos in both the interior and the exterior of the building. A former resident has stated that asbestos was discarded in a dumpster outside her window, and that workers who did not wear any sort of protective clothing were using the same elevators as the residents used.

Asbestos is a toxic mineral that is dangerous when its fibers are inhaled. Asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses like asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare but serious form of cancer that targets the lining surrounding the lungs and other organs.
