Virginia school board has five year $59 million capital improvement plan

The Newport News School Board in Virginia created a $59 million wish list of capital improvement projects for the next five years. The capital improvement plan for 2004-2009 had included over $70 million in capital projects; only $30 million of those projects were funded, and those that went unfunded have been carried over to the new five-year plan.

Magruder Early Childhood Center and Huntington Middle School are slated for $16.3 million in renovations. Neither of the schools has been renovated in the past, and major renovations include replacement of asbestos-containing flooring.

Other capital improvement projects include roof replacements, HVAC work, new windows, water line replacements, electrical upgrades, school bus replacement, stadium upgrades, and science lab upgrades. The school district hopes to complete much of the work with federal stimulus money.
