Pennsylvania school renovations include asbestos abatement

The Tuscarora School District in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania is wrapping up its summer renovation projects. Asbestos was removed from St. Thomas Elementary School and from the high school. Prior to the 1980s, many schools and other public buildings were constructed with materials that contained the toxic substance asbestos, a known carcinogen that can lead to asbestosis, mesothelioma cancer, and other serious illnesses.

Work crews also repaired and replaced water lines leading to the middle and high school buildings, changing the notoriously brown water to thankfully clear. Roofs were repaired in several of the school buildings, and the high school pool was drained, uncovering repairs that need to be done to the pool’s grout. The track is being repaved and upgraded, and that work is behind schedule, which will interfere with the fall sports season.
