Workers removing asbestos before demolition of Connecticut factory

The Triangle Wire & Cable plant is being demolished in Griswold, Connecticut. Demolition crews are collapsing portions of the structure as work continues, but environmental studies must be done before the property can be redeveloped. Working Realty Ltd., which is based in New York City, is removing the asbestos from the factory buildings before demolition work gets underway. After the asbestos is removed, workers are piling steel, light iron and wood for salvaging and recycling.

Triangle Wire & Cable vacated the property in 1995. Since then, residents and city officials have considered the plant an eyesore. It was also a potential hazard for fire and vandalism. Back in April, firefighters put out a fire that had started between two beams in the ceiling; there hadn’t been a sprinkler system in place to help them contain the blaze.

Neighbors are happy that the buildings are finally coming down, but some of them worry about environmental contaminants such as asbestos. When the plant closed, an environmental company sealed the concrete slabs to ensure that such contaminants would not leak into the ground water or become disturbed during demolition.
