New York school district adds emergency asbestos removal project

Oneonta City School District in New York declared an emergency capital project when asbestos was discovered in the high school gymnasium following a water leak. The cause of the leak is still unknown. No students were in the school building on July 30 when the incident occurred, and the asbestos levels were found to be below federally mandated levels when testing was completed.

It will take approximately $200,000 to clean up the asbestos. Construction workers and school employees who were near the area at the time have been notified about the incident. Cleanup will be finished before the start of classes, but no one will be allowed in the area until further testing is done.
