Chicago school schedules community forum about asbestos and mold

May Whitney Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois is holding a community forum to address the concerns of parents and community members about mold and asbestos problems. The community forum was scheduled for August 20 in the school gymnasium, with school district officials and environmental agencies in attendance.

After the flooding of the original May Whitney building in 2007 forced the elementary school to move to a new location, parents were concerned about the safety of the facility, which had been previously used for storage. Environmental testing completed at the time determined that the new building location was safe. The school superintendent is unsure why the building’s safety has been called into question again.

A member of a group called No Mold Left Behind wants the school district to include speakers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Illinois Department of Public Health at the community forum.
