Illinois elementary school removes asbestos to make room for new boiler

Spring Grove Elementary School in Illinois is replacing an old boiler. When the old boiler was removed by Dyna Coil Inc., workers discovered that there was asbestos around the pipes. This was not an unexpected finding, as the boiler room was built in 1965, and asbestos was commonly used in public buildings until 1980.

Holian Industries took care of the asbestos removal, which cost about $16,000. The new boiler will cost about $157,000. ESI has been inspecting the school building, and has declared it asbestos-free.

School officials want parents to know that the school will be cleaned and ready when the students begin classes on August 19. Although the barricades and warning signs used during the asbestos removal process may have worried parents, officials report that the school is now completely safe.
