Unexpected asbestos at Wisconsin school delays maintenance projects
Case High School in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin was conducting planned maintenance over the summer when asbestos was discovered on the tops of old windows that had originally tested as free of asbestos. When asbestos is disturbed by construction or damage, the fibers can become airborne. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause serious illnesses like asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
The school removed the asbestos from the contaminated windows, but the asbestos removal slowed down the window replacement project. In turn, that slowed down a project to replace the exterior doors. The window replacement project should be completed by the time school starts on September 1, but the door replacement may extend into the school year. This will not disrupt classes for students, as doors can be replaced all year long.
