Connecticut man gets 20 months in jail for illegal dumping

Donald Chairamonte of Connecticut, also known as “Donnie the Dump,” was sentenced to 20 months in prison and $15,000 in restitution for a long history of illegal dumping dating back to 1976. He pleaded guilty to illegal dumping, reckless endangerment, illegal disposal of asbestos and criminal trespass. Chairamonte had been charging customers to haul away all types of debris and dumping it illegally.

Investigators who were looking into the serial dumping were able to track down Chairamonte’s customers when they discovered their mail, receipts and other personal information mixed in with the debris. Roofing material was dumped at a Westbrook business in November 2007, much of which was contaminated with asbestos. The property owner spent over $11,000 cleaning up the debris, as the asbestos posed a serious health hazard. Asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. State and federal law regulate the disposal of asbestos and prescribe proper methods of handling and disposing of the hazardous substance.
