Potsdam Civic Center at the center of asbestos lawsuit
Former Potsdam Civic Center employee Sharon M. LaDuke of New York recently died of mesothelioma, and her family has hired a mesothelioma lawyer to file a lawsuit to investigate whether or not asbestos-wrapped pipes and an old boiler were removed properly from the civic center in 1999 and 2000. The lawsuit names 68 defendants, including Wisconsin boiler manufacturer Cleaver-Brooks Co.
Cleaver-Brooks, formerly known as Aqua Chem, manufactured the boiler that was installed at the Potsdam Civic Center in 1977. A village trustee stated that he doesn’t believe the boiler unit contained asbestos, as a service technician from the company that sold the boiler didn’t think that the boiler parts used asbestos.
Typically through much of the twentieth century, even when a boiler did not contain asbestos within its components, the boiler specifications called for the use of asbestos insulation to be used on and around it. Asbestos insulation was present in the civic center boiler room and other downstairs locations, which was removed in 1999. The boiler was removed in 2000 by village work crews.
