Michigan courthouse will remain open during renovations and asbestos removal
The Michael E. Kobza Hall of Justice in Muskegon County, Michigan will be undergoing renovations to make more space for district court operations, open up the lobby and install service counters past the main security entrance.
In preparation for the renovations, workers from the register of deeds office and the treasurer’s office will be moving across the street temporarily, beginning in August or September. County officials are still determining what to do with the clerk’s office and the storage of paper records.
Demolition cannot begin until an asbestos inspection is conducted. After the inspection, the contaminated areas will be sealed off so that the toxic substance can be removed by certified asbestos contractors. If asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause a number of serious illnesses like mesothelioma, asbestosis and asbestos-related lung cancer.
The courtrooms and the rest of the public building will remain open during the asbestos removal and renovation process. County Administrator Bonnie Hammersley stated that this is not a concern, as the contractor will be performing the work in accordance with the relevant regulations.
