Ontario CEO thanked Canadian Cancer Society volunteers

Susan Whelan, CEO of the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society, went on a tour of Southwestern Ontario to meet with local cancer volunteers and CCS employees in early July. During her visits, she stated that cancer survivor rates are improving – now at 62% – but there is still a lot of work to be done.

The society has pledged in particular to fight for occupationally caused cancers of the chest like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that has killed many former workers from the Chemical Valley. The society has also focused on lung cancer, noting that lung cancer rates are high while their survival rates are low.

Whelan thanked the cancer society volunteers who have helped run fundraising events and programs for local cancer patients and survivors. Their fundraising events raise money for cancer research and local programs. A local unit manager called Whelan’s visit a real morale booster for society employees and volunteers.
