Teachers learned of asbestos in school from letters sent to parents
Parents of St. Brigid’s School in Denbigh, North Wales were sent letters informing them that the stage area of the school’s sports hall would be closed due to asbestos, and that asbestos abatement would not be occurring until the summer holidays. Teachers at the school were not informed of the asbestos problem, and only learned of it when the letters were distributed to students and their parents.
An official from the teachers union stated that the school’s conduct was outrageous. Teachers are worried for their health because they had spent time in the sports hall area and they were not informed of the dangers. They only heard about the asbestos contamination through gossip and the letters sent to the parents.
The headmaster at St. Brigid’s was not available for comment, but a spokesperson for the Denbighshire County Council stated that the asbestos contamination is not located in an area that is open to students, and that unless the asbestos is disturbed, it does not pose a health risk.
