UK businessman dies of mesothelioma at age 68

David Dobson, co-founder of Davern Workwear in the UK, died of mesothelioma at the age of 68. Mesothelioma is a rare but serious form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Dobson’s family believes that he may have developed the disease from asbestos exposure that occurred at a time when his factory produced protective equipment and clothing for people who worked with asbestos, and he often had contact with workers in the asbestos industry.

Dobson began having difficulty breathing in September 2008. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma the same month. In October, he underwent groundbreaking surgery to remove the linings of his lungs, heart sack and other organs. He followed up the surgery with further cancer treatment, and his daughter Claire said that he fought the disease with everything he had.

Over the next few months, Dobson began feeling better. In May 2009, however, he took a turn for the worse, and he returned to the hospital. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to Thorpe Hall, a Sue Ryder hospice in Peterborough. Dobson lost his battle with mesothelioma on June 23, 2009, just seven months following his diagnosis.
