New Mexico museum can’t afford to replace asbestos-laden roof
The Tularosa Basin Historical Society had leased the old Plaza Pub in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 2006 for use by the Alamogordo Museum of History, which is in need of a larger building. The historical society, however, can no longer afford to renovate and lease the building.
Asbestos was found in the roof of the Plaza Pub building, requiring expensive removal and replacement on a project where the renovation bids had already come back over what was available in the budget. Alamogordo Mayor Steve Brockett believes that the project’s architect low-balled a number of figures, as all renovation bids came back approximately $100,000 over the available budget, and none of the bids included the replacement of the asbestos-laden roof.
The building must be used to house a museum or Alamogordo my repay $300,000 to the state of New Mexico. The city is reviewing its options and potential sources for new funding to complete the museum project.
