British government delays announcement on compensation for asbestos victims

The UK construction union Ucatt is criticizing the British government for stalling on deciding whether to compensate workers with pleural plaques, a condition caused by asbestos that increases the risk of mesothelioma and other cancers.

The UK government, which previously withdrew compensation for individuals with pleural plaques, began looking into whether to restore such compensation in July 2008, and purportedly concluded its inquiry that October. However, in spite of officials’ repeated statements that a decision would be announced soon, it has still not been made public.
