Alfacell reports results of Phase IIIb mesothelioma clinical trial
Alfacell, maker of the chemotherapy drug Onconase, reported recently that, while its clinical trial for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma (a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure) did not meet the company’s endpoint of overall survival, it did achieve statistical significance with an overall survival of 10.5 months for a subgroup of patients who had not previously responded to chemotherapy. As a result, the company believes that Onconase is a viable candidate as a second-line therapy for patients with malignant mesothelioma with inoperable tumors. In addition to treating mesothelioma, the makers of Onconase are hopeful that it will eventually be an adjunct to cancer treatment protocols for a wide variety of cancers.
