Baton Rouge companies face fines for exposing workers to asbestos contamination

Three Baton Rouge, Louisiana companies face fines totaling $112,000 for failing to protect workers from asbestos exposure during the renovation of the State National Life Building. Asbestos exposure is linked to mesothelioma and other diseases.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced that it would seek collection of the fines for 13 alleged violations of health and safety regulations from Louisiana Health Care Consultants LLC, Dean Building Holdings and Bob Dean Enterprises, Inc.

According to OSHA, the companies did not follow federal regulations governing asbestos-related projects in the construction industry. They were guilty of failing to alert workers that an asbestos-containing ceiling was being removed; failing to ensure employees’ use of protective equipment; and failing to use engineering controls to minimize asbestos exposure.

According to the National Cancer Institute, working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma.
