Asbestos manufacturer James Hardie targets U.S. housing market

James Hardie—the Australian company whose executives in 2001 misrepresented that its asbestos compensation fund was fully funded when it was not, see related story—is looking to set up shop in Chicago. Now, its new executives’ plan for profit is focused on the U.S. market. Hopefully, that money will be used to finally compensate victims of mesothelioma, asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases caused by the asbestos-containing products the company once made.

The “new” James Hardie manufactures pressed fiber cement that looks like lumber and is used in home building, especially in sunny regions like the U.S. Sunbelt. The company plans on making Chicago its base of operations because the city is less than four hours from its major markets.
