Asbestos found at Calumet City, Illinois high school
Asbestos was discovered in pipe inside of Thornton Fractional High School’s walls during a renovation of office space at the Calumet City, Illinois school. The asbestos, a toxic substance that can cause mesothelioma and other diseases, was discovered by a construction crew knocking out a wall being removed to enlarge school guidance counselors’ offices.
The superintendent of schools described asbestos flakes in the air looking like popcorn. It will now take two weeks to remove the asbestos from the 51-year-old building before the renovation can continue. The abatement project will cost the district about $16,000.
