Maryland schools undergo asbestos removal
Two Washington County, Maryland schools are undergoing asbestos removal this summer. Asbestos exposure can cause the cancer mesothelioma and other diseases. Fountaindale Elementary School and E. Russell Hicks Middle School are the sites of the asbestos removal projects. At Fountaindale, the glazing and caulking on the old windows contain asbestos. It is being removed to prepare for a project to replace all of the exterior windows and doors. At the middle school, spray-on fireproofing insulation containing asbestos is being removed prior to replacement of glass, doors and heaters in two of the school’s corridors. The asbestos has been present since the schools were built. The elementary school was built in 1949 and the middle school was built in 1967. For the full story, go to Herald.
