Ontario radar sites contaminated with asbestos and other toxic substances
Sixteen former northern Ontario radar sites from the Cold War era are undergoing a 100-million dollar clean-up to remove asbestos and other contaminants. Asbestos is linked to mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lung lining. The radar sites are also contaminated with PCBs, hydrocarbons, and mercury. The clean-up project, which will be funded with monies from the province and the Canadian government, is anticipated to last six years. The contaminated radar stations have not been used since the mid-1960s. For the full story, to go 680 news.
