Two men indicted for improper asbestos removal in Massachusetts

Two men were indicted this week on charges of improperly removing asbestos from buildings and other Clean Air Act violations. Asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma and other diseases. The owner and foreman of Northeast Demolition and Removal were indicted for failing to file notices of asbestos demolition with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, failure to conduct proper asbestos removal, and failure to comply with regulations governing asbestos removal. The defendants allegedly instructed workers to demolish part of the Balour Building in North Attleboro and buildings on Main Street in Attleboro. A consultant for the company had conducted a required asbestos survey prior to the demolition, but the company did not remove the asbestos as required. Inspectors allegedly found evidence of asbestos debris at the demolition site, as well as 76 cardboard drums containing asbestos debris at a storage facility in Middleboro.
