Asbestos discovered in public housing

A resident of a British public housing project discovered asbestos in her apartment after a flood damaged her flat. She has now joined a campaign for a national public register of asbestos involving all public buildings in the UK. Over 4,000 Brits die each year of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers.

Karen Connolly, age 46, discovered the asbestos when cleaning up after workers who tore out bathroom panels to do repairs. Tests run on the dust from her vacuum cleaner confirmed the presence of asbestos. The walls, ceilings and floors of her apartment are now covered with asbestos warning stickers, and she is working on finding alternative housing.
