Mesothelioma patient praises hospice care
A 71-year-old former dock worker with asbestos-related mesothelioma credits the St. Helena hospice day care as giving him a new lease on life. David Shirra of the UK, in praising the center as part of its first-ever Hospice Awareness Week, said that far from being a place to go to die, the hospice has helped him learn how to live with his cancer. The hospice provides him with practical help, such as showing him ways to breathe better and providing courses in managing stress. The camaraderie with fellow patients has also been a big boost to him, giving him a chance to befriend and relate with people also dealing with incurable diseases. Additionally, the hospice has provided support to family members, such as the art therapy course which has helped his granddaughter accept his illness.
