Construction union examines asbestos rules for residential housing

The UK construction union UCATT has issued a report examining deficiencies in the rules governing the management of asbestos in residential housing. Their report, titled “Safe as Houses?” discusses the management and removal of asbestos from social housing as well as flaws in the rules governing asbestos in private sector housing. According to the report, there are huge discrepancies in how local authorities and social landlords advise tenants about potential asbestos exposure risks. For example, social landlords are currently only required by law to manage asbestos in communal areas, not inside dwelling areas. The report also recommends that social landlords be required to maintain an asbestos register for all their properties. Asbestos can causes diseases like the cancer mesothelioma.
