Illegal excavation shut down; community risks exposure to asbestos, other toxins
The Connecticut Attorney General won a court order on May 21 to shut down the illegal excavation of a former Raymark Industries site in Stratford. The property, located on East Main Street, is one of over 25 sites in the town awaiting remediation as part of an EPA Superfund clean-up. Raymark, which once manufactured asbestos-containing auto parts including brakes and clutches, generated the waste throughout its many years of operation in the town. The waste byproducts, which were also contaminated with lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, and copper, were often used as fill in residential, commercial, and municipal areas. Emergency response teams from both the state’s Department of Environmental Protection and the EPA were working to stabilize the soil at the site last week. Air monitoring stations have also been set up to monitor dust levels, and a silt fence will be built to keep the contaminated soil from spreading.
