453 Manitoba schools still contain asbestos–with no abatement plan
Over half of the public schools in the Canadian province of Manitoba contain asbestos, with no long-term plan to remove the hazardous fiber from the buildings. Asbestos, when disturbed, can eventually cause serious diseases such as malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Most of the asbestos is found in schools built between 1945 and 1978, when asbestos was popularly used in construction materials and insulation. By law, all Canadian schools must keep an inventory of asbestos in school buildings, and workers are required to be notified of asbestos in order to protect themselves and the buildings’ occupants.
