NY school board approves investigation of asbestos removal
The Patchogue-Medford’s school board has authorized an investigation and possible prosecution of a resident who allegedly took a sample of pipe insulation believed to contain asbestos from Eagle Elementary School. The man had recently shot video footage of the school’s interior and provided it to a local TV station, which repeatedly aired it in late May. School attendance has subsequently dropped by as much as a third. The Long Island school district was cited by the Labor Department in November 2008 for improperly removing asbestos-containing floor tile at the same school. School officials insist that the school is safe. Many Long Island schools built in the 1950s and 1960s still have some asbestos-containing insulation and floor tiles.
