British man with mesothelioma wins bet by outliving his prognosis
A British man with asbestos-related mesothelioma bet against his doctor’s poor prognosis and won 10,000 pounds as a result. Jon Mathews, age 59, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2006 and told that he only had a few months to live. He then placed 100 pounds on a 50 – 1 bet that he would live to at least mid-2007. He won five thousand pounds on the bet and on June 1, 2008, proceeded to bet that he would live to see June 1, 2009. He has now placed a bet at 100:1 that he will survive until at least June 1, 2010.
