New studies of mesothelioma drug to be revealed

At the end of this month, Eli Lilly and Co. will present the newest research on the effectiveness of its prominent mesothelioma drug Alimta as well as Gemzar, which is sometimes also used to treat mesothelioma, and the investigational drug enzastaurin. In addition to being a treatment of choice (with cisplatin) for mesothelioma patients who cannot undergo thoracic surgery, Alimta is also used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. Gemzar is used as a chemotherapy agent to treat a variety of cancers.

The company has announced that it will offer data from more than 50 studies at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meetings, taking place in Orlando from May 29 to June 2, 2009.

Studies like these are important to cancer researchers and clinicians to help determine what type of patient is likely to respond to a particular therapy, and what type of patient is unlikely to benefit from a treatment option.
