Eugene developer arrested on felony air pollution charges

Den Desler, a developer and businessman from Eugene, Oregon, has been arrested for felony air pollution in connection with demolition operations on the site of the former Sweet Home lumber mill. Buildings on the site were demolished between May 2007 and February 2008 to clear the space for development of a 432-lot subdivision. These buildings contained asbestos, however, and the required safety procedures were not used to prevent the release of dangerous asbestos fibers.

Desler’s nonprofit Western States Land Reliance Trust has also been charged with multiple counts of felony and misdemeanor unlawful air pollution.

Desler is being held at the Linn County Jail on $100,000 bail.
