Des Moines developer hit with $500,000 fine for asbestos violations

Des Moines developer Bob Knapp has agreed to a $500,000 fine for asbestos violations in the renovation of a building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The 19-story historic building was found to have asbestos throughout, and the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission passed the case to the Iowa Attorney General’s office because the highest fine that can be assessed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is $10,000, which was felt to be too small under the circumstances. The fine, which will be paid by Knapp’s holding company, Equitable L.P., is the largest asbestos fine in the state’s history.
