World Health Organization affirms mesothelioma risk from all asbestos types
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has confirmed that all types of commercial asbestos—including chrysotile asbestos, the type most commonly used in the United States—cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and laryngeal cancer. At its most recent meeting, IARC also reported that the evidence supports the conclusion asbestos exposure also causes ovarian cancer.
While asbestos exposure has long been known to cause serious lung disease and a variety of cancers, the connection to ovarian cancer is an important new finding.
