No more asbestos inspections in Michigan?

According to Alex Sagady, an environmental consultant, the 2009-2010 budget proposed by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm does not provide for state asbestos inspections that would normally enforce clean air standards during asbestos-related renovations, demolition and waste disposal.

Although the federal regulations themselves would remain in effect, without inspections to ensure compliance, they cannot be as effective. Sagady says that the result of cutting asbestos inspections from the budget will be “de facto deregulation” of asbestos releases during renovations and demolitions.
