U. Minnesota agrees to asbestos penalties
The University of Minnesota will pay $60,000 for asbestos violations. The University left torn-out asbestos in a student movie theater after a boiler was dismantled. The violations reportedly put more than 13,000 people visiting the theater last summer at risk for asbestos exposure. Elsewhere on University property, asbestos wall panels were found left behind from building demolitions in the 1940s; the panels were crushed not long ago during grounds work, making it more likely that asbestos would be released.
The University will pay a $5,000 fine for each of the two violations and will pay $50,000 to an environmental fund for asbestos research on campus. And the sites have been cleaned of asbestos contamination.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency investigated the incidents.
