Minnesota’s first registered building trades apprentice faces mesothelioma

Seventy years ago, Bill Stille of Sheet Metal Workers Local 10 became the very first registered building trades apprentice in the state of Minnesota. He interrupted his work in the trades only to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is now 90 years old and has malignant mesothelioma, which he revealed at his recent birthday party celebrated by his old union.

Stille studied air conditioning and says he liked to do the system layouts. Last year, Baron & Budd announced that its attorneys had discovered that heating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment manufacturers used asbestos components in their equipment but did not warn consumers. See Press Release. Exposure to asbestos in these products can cause malignant mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that attacks the lining surrounding the lungs, abdomen or heart.
