Asbestos removal begins at Iowa’s Polk County Courthouse

Iowa’s Polk County Courthouse is beginning an asbestos removal project because, although asbestos-containing materials at the 102-year-old courthouse are believed to be in safe condition right now, as they age and renovations or repairs are needed, they could deteriorate and present a health risk. The project is expected to cost approximately $200,000.

Pro Environmental Abatement Inc., which has completed projects in over thirty Iowa cities, will begin working at night to remove old asbestos insulation from various rooms in the Polk County Courthouse. The rooms undergoing asbestos removal will be sealed off to avoid exposure to court staff and visitors. The abatement project will be ongoing for the next several months.

When asbestos-containing materials deteriorate or are disturbed, they can release asbestos fibers, and exposure to these fibers can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer or other serious illnesses.
