Land by contaminated landfill could become Kentucky wildlife refuge

According to a story that appeared in the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, BFI Waste Systems of North America has offered a tract of 74 acres to Daviess County, Kentucky. The land, located in western Kentucky, is next to the former Green River Disposal landfill. The facility on Kelly Cemetery Road was in operation from 1970 until 1983 and accepted a variety of hazardous substances including asbestos, steel dust and aluminum salt doss cake. The EPA ordered the site, designated the Maceo Superfund site, cleaned up in the 1990s.

If the transfer goes through, the land will be used as a wildlife refuge.
