New Hampshire man faces felony charges for illegal asbestos removal
In the wake of the well-publicized criminal indictments of W.R. Grace and six of its current and former executives, willful polluters are more often being subjected to criminal prosecution for their actions—actions that create a serious public health risk.
New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte has charged 57-year-old Paul Davis of Winchester with six felony counts for violations of the New Hampshire asbestos control and management laws. The allegations are that he improperly removed asbestos from a structure in Keene.
The investigation into these charges was a joint effort by the New Hampshire AG’s office, the EPA, the NH Dept of Environmental Services and the Keene police. AG Ayotte says that it was necessary to file criminal charges against Davis because of the significant health risk posed by asbestos exposure. Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious illnesses. These illnesses generally appear decades after the exposure.
