Asbestos cleanup will cost Pueblo County, Colorado $6.6 million

Pueblo County, Colorado has spent well over $6 million on clearing asbestos contamination from the site of a former cold storage building that burned in 2007. The owner should have had the site cleaned up after the fire, but he refused and the county took possession of the property. The site will be redeveloped as a new county judicial complex. The total cost for the project—including cleanup, the cost of the property and construction of the new building—could total more than $40 million.

The cleanup has cost much more than expected. County officials believe they have been overbilled and plan to challenge the amount.
