Mesothelioma kills Michigan firefighter at 56

Brad Wilson, a firefighter from Oshtemo Township, Michigan has died of mesothelioma at the age of 56. He spent over 25 years working with the Portage Fire Department.

Asbestos exposure is a significant risk to firefighters. When older buildings are damaged by fire, asbestos-containing materials inside can release fibers into the air, exposing firefighters and remaining on their suits so that they can be inhaled later.

Asbestos exposure can cause desvastating illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious diseases; but these illnesses do not appear until much later—sometimes several decades after the exposure. Given the immediate risks of their jobs and their vital role as first responders, this hazard is often ignored.

The brotherhood of firefighters, who face such risks for us every day, can be inspiring. This brotherhood was reflected deeply by Wilson’s station colleagues, who carried Wilson’s helmet with them on every call when Wilson himself became too sick to work. And they maintained his long-term disability benefits by working his regular 24-hour shifts for him by rotation.
