Sunoco refinery in Westville, NJ faces substantial repeat asbestos fines
The Sunoco oil refinery in Westville, New Jersey has been cited by OSHA for 34 health and safety violations. Nine of the citations are for repeat violations, many involving the labeling and safe handling of asbestos. OSHA proposed $200,000 in fines for these repeat violations and an additional $105,000 for 25 other serious healthy and safety violations. A “serious” violation reflects a hazard that the employer knew or should have known about that could likely result in death or serious physical harm.
Repeat violations are considered especially serious because they reflect the employer’s failure to correct hazards despite actual knowledge of them and guidance about the corrections needed.
Sunoco Inc. can challenge the citations before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission within 15 business days of their receipt. The Sunoco refinery employs 472 workers.
