Next stage of asbestos cleanup ahead for Bozeman superfund site

By submitting its proposal to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, the City of Bozeman has moved one step closer to cleaning up the asbestos contamination that turned an area near the new Bozeman Public Library into a superfund site. Asbestos became a problem at the site because it was previously used to store and mill asbestos ore before it was transported elsewhere.

The current proposal is an addendum to the Voluntary Cleanup Plan adopted in 2002 and addresses how the City will clean up the asbestos still remaining at the site. The Montana DEQ is seeking public comment on the plan through January 18, 2009. It can be viewed through the DEQ’s website.

It has been estimated that the remaining asbestos cleanup at the site will cost about $438,000. The city will be reimbursed a percentage of the total amount by the Montana DEQ.
