EPA creates an environmental “most wanted” list
To draw attention to fugitives on the run from serious environmental crimes, the EPA has created a “most wanted” list. Among the 23 names on the initial list are Joseph Anthony O’Connor, believed to be in Malta, who is alleged to have released pollutants into California’s San Diego Bay. And Omran Alghazouli, last spotted in Syria, who allegedly engaged in criminal transactions regarding ozone-attacking Freon.
The EPA is seeking help in locating these alleged environmental criminals and bringing them to justice but warns that some of these individuals may be “armed and dangerous.” So far, the EPA has not offered an award for assistance from the public, but officials are looking into the possibility.
Since it is clear that several members of the wanted list have moved to other countries, federal officials are seeking the help of Interpol and other international agencies to bring them to justice.
