Asbestos slowing demolition of Liberty, Ohio’s Ramada Inn

The dilapidated Ramada Inn at 4255 Belmont Ave. in Liberty, Ohio has been vacant for seven years. Plans to demolish and redevelop the site have been frustrated by the discovery of more asbestos than anticipated. All asbestos must be removed from the building before the structure can be torn down to avoid releasing asbestos into the environment where it could be inhaled by people in the area.

Asbestos exposure puts people at risk for developing a number of serious and sometimes fatal diseases like lung cancer and mesothelioma.

The newly discovered asbestos will add about $10,000 to the project, but the cleanup should be finished soon. It could take a couple of months for the demolition to be completed.

But the economic environment poses still another problem for the property. Although a number of people have expressed interest in the site, people are reluctant to commit to redeveloping the property given the uncertain state of the economy.
